A Pleasantly Vintage All-Inclusive Stay at El Mouradi Cap Mahdia
+ Yes, it is true: El Mouradi Cap Mahdia was built quite some time ago, when affordable all-inclusive holiday resorts were first beginning to become popular. Over the years, some work has been needed to update the furnishings and perhaps reinforce a few doors; overall, however, the property is well presented, even though it has a slightly vintage feel. The double room we were given was comfortable, and both the air conditioning and the TV worked perfectly. The small balcony was pleasant both for enjoying the view of the sea — always an extraordinary colour somewhere between blue and emerald — beyond the green roofs of the outdoor restaurant, and for hanging out beach towels and swimwear to dry. Reception and housekeeping were quick and efficient. The food is simple and, on the whole, good. Fortunately, it is less “international” than it perhaps aims to be. There are plenty of vegetables, gently spiced dishes, fish — the stewed mackerel and small hake were excellent — eggs, and more. Pasta that is already rather overcooked and then tossed in a pan seems to be a must, perhaps owing to French influence. The pizza, on the other hand, is baked to order and, although the dough is slightly sweet — because of the semolina? The milk? —, it is by no means among the worst we have ever had. As for the desserts, it might be worth changing suppliers and trying some local specialities instead. I am sure local pastry chefs can do much better than those multicoloured yet uniformly flavoured layers of dry sponge cake and rather unconvincing creams, which are not even particularly sweet. A wider choice of fruit would also be welcome, and melons and watermelons should be served chilled. The buffet works reasonably well. Queues tend to form because people hesitate at the last moment when faced with a choice of around ten different dishes. Oddly, however, they almost always form on one side only, while the other side — where exactly the same food is displayed — is usually much quicker. The waiters and waitresses are quick to bring anything that is missing and to reset the tables; in practice, we hardly ever had to wait long. One thing that should definitely go, however, is the griddle. We saw it being used for prawns, burgers and merguez sausages, and every time the oil burned, filling the covered area with an unpleasant smell and acrid, choking smoke. The fine sandy beach is lovely, and the beach service is excellent. The pool also does its job. The bar serves brightly coloured cocktails that do not appear to be of particularly high quality, as well as shisha, although we never quite worked out how to order one. We saw adults and children happily taking part in the sports and entertainment activities, which were run by a young, all-male team. The spa, which offers reasonably priced massages and spa rituals, seemed a little less popular. In August, most guests were local or otherwise from Arab countries, along with visitors from Eastern Europe — from the Balkans to Ukraine, as far as I could tell. The medina is easy to reach by taxi.
