Overview

A playful approach, but very respectful of Indian spirituality in Mauritius through the visit of 3 emblematic temples, its main deities, anecdotes and Mauritian history, slavery and commitment to today where religion still plays its full role in daily life. Why does Shiva have a blue neck? Why should lingam be constantly watered? Why is Ganesh's right defense broken? … Maha Shivaratree, Cavadee, Ganesh Chaturti, Ganga Snan, Govinden? … What are we celebrating at these festivals? Hindu religion, Tamil religion? What impact on Mauritian society today? Are we so culturally distant or so close, when the waters of the Red Sea opened before Moses, like those of the Yamuna before Krishna and his father? We also propose to attend and follow the processions or prayers on specific festival dates.

What to expect

1. Starting point of the first Maha Shivaratree pilgrimage in 1898, a place of Hinduism in Mauritius

2. Visit of a first Tamil temple (kovil) in the north of Mauritius located in Cap Malheureux, descriptive, History, legends and myths.

3. Visit a second Tamil temple where you can admire an imposing statue of the God Muruga 15 meters high, replica of the statue at the entrance of the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur.
